Description
A self assembly signal head kit for those wanting to produce colour light signals of a style that are not easily obtained ready made. These heads can be used in places such as custom signal gantries mounted signals on overbridges and tunnels. They are priced to be as economical as possible for the scratch builder.
The signal head kits include 10 signal heads 10 red and 10 green 1.8mm LEDs and 10 resistors. The signal heads are precision moulded in the same way as our street lights. The surface has a finish to represent cast iron and can be painted in any colour to suit the region. The signal head kits can also be used to manufacture other types of signals by changing the LEDS. this is what our customers have been saying is the missing kit from the Electech range of signals.

Our Self-assembly signal head kits are a fantastic way to add realism and functionality to your layout. These kits provide the components needed to assemble a working or non-working signal head that replicates the look of real-world railway signals. Here’s an overview:
Features of our Self-Assembly Signal Head Kit
- Components Included:
- Signal Head Body: Pre-moulded components to form the signal housing.
- LEDs For working lights (red, yellow, green, or custom depending on the signal type).
- Resistors: To match LED voltage requirements for safe operation.
- Use your choice of wires and Connectors: For connecting the signal to a power source or control system (not supplied in the kit).
- Realistic Design:
- Scaled-down replicas of real signal heads.
- Options coming soon for modern LED signals, or traditional incandescent styles.
- Customization:
- Paintable surfaces to match the specific railway era or region.
- Compatibility with different control systems (DC, DCC, Arduino-based systems).
Advantages of Using a Kit
- Cost-Effective: Cheaper than pre-assembled signals.
- Customization: You can paint, weather, and modify to fit your layout theme.
- Learning Opportunity: A great way to understand signal operation and electrical basics.
- Adaptability: Often compatible with a range of control systems.
Assembly Process
- Preparation:
- Gather tools such as tweezers, soldering iron, fine paintbrushes, and a Multimeter.
- Familiarize yourself with the components.
- Painting:
- Paint the signal housing and mast before assembly for a professional look. (use our range of structural mouldings)
- Use fine detail brushes and model paints for accuracy.
- Wiring the LEDs:
- Solder wires to the LED terminals, ensuring proper polarity.
- Attach resistors as supplied to prevent LED burnout.
- Assembling the Signal Head:
- Secure LEDs or lenses into the signal housing.
- Attach the signal head to the mast or base.
- Testing:
- Connect the assembled signal to a power source or controller.
- Test each light function to ensure proper operation.
Tips for Success
- Use a magnifying lamp for precision.
- Double-check LED polarity before soldering.
- Label wires for easy connection to your layout’s power or control system.
- Practice patience and take breaks to avoid mistakes.
