Rotary switches 1 to 4pole up to 12 way

SKU: N/A Category:

Description

A Range of rotary switches manufactured to high quality specifications. They provide easy methods of controlling multiple circuits in 4 standard types. supplied in solder tag form they can dramatically reduce the wiring required when used in gangs.

They are ideal for use with our color light signals and other items that need more than 3 outputs from a single switch.

These rotary switches are available in single pole 12 way, 2 pole six way, 3 pole 4 way and 4 pole 3way.. A range of control Knobs with different indication colours are also available as well as a standard pointer control knob.

These switches have standard D Shafts.

Rotary switches are a popular choice for controlling various functions in model railways due to their reliability and ability to manage multiple circuits or configurations in a compact form. Here’s an overview of their use and applications:

What Are Rotary Switches?

Rotary switches allow users to select between multiple electrical paths using a rotating mechanism. Each position on the switch corresponds to a different circuit, making them ideal for tasks requiring multiple outputs.

Applications in Model Railways

  1. Track Section Selection
    • Used to switch power between different track sections or blocks.
    • Common in block control systems to enable or disable power to specific sections.
  2. Turnout Control
    • Helps in controlling points or turnouts by directing power to the appropriate motor or actuator.
  3. Accessory Management
    • Useful for switching between various lighting or accessory circuits, such as station lights, signals, or building illumination.
  4. Route Setting
    • Allows for selecting predefined routes on a complex layout by powering specific track combinations.
  5. Throttle Selection
    • Some advanced setups use rotary switches to choose between different controllers or throttles for train operation.

Types of Rotary Switches for Model Railways

  1. Single Pole Rotary Switches
    • Controls a single circuit.
    • Ideal for simple setups with fewer connections.
  2. Multi-Pole Rotary Switches
    • Can control multiple circuits simultaneously.
    • Suitable for more complex layouts or when combining multiple functions.

How to Wire

  1. Determine Poles and Positions
    • Check how many circuits (poles) and positions the switch has.
  2. Connect Power
    • Attach the common terminal to the power source.
  3. Connect Outputs
    • Each position’s terminal is wired to the specific circuit it controls.
  4. Test Connections
    • Rotate the switch through all positions to verify functionality.

Advantages

  • Compact Design: Saves space on control panels.
  • Durability: Reliable mechanical action for long-term use.
  • Versatility: Can handle various voltage and current levels.

Choosing the Right Rotary Switch

  • Number of Positions: Match to the number of circuits you need to control.
  • Voltage and Current Ratings: Ensure the switch can handle your setup’s power requirements.
