Description
Abrasive Glass Fibre Pencil – available as 2mm or 4mm pencil (Refils available 2mm pack 5 – 4mm pack 10)
Ideal tool for accurate and rapid cleaning, de-rusting and surface preparation for the railway modeller and works on a variety of materials. The propelling pencil action exposes more or less of the glass fibres. The shorter the fibres showing, the more abrasive the action.
Glass fibre pencils are a useful tool in model railways, particularly for maintenance, cleaning, and detailing. Here are some common uses:
1. Track Cleaning:
- A glass fibre pencil is excellent for cleaning oxidation and dirt from the rails, ensuring good electrical conductivity.
- It is particularly effective for removing tough grime from hard-to-reach areas like point contacts.
2. Locomotive & Rolling Stock Maintenance:
- Useful for cleaning wheel treads to improve electrical pickup.
- Can be used to remove rust or corrosion from metal surfaces.
3. Weathering and Detailing:
- Can be used to gently abrade paint to create a realistic worn effect on rolling stock, buildings, or trackside equipment.
- Helps achieve subtle weathering effects by exposing underlying layers of paint or material.
4. Surface Preparation for Soldering:
- Cleans metal surfaces before soldering to ensure a strong joint.
- Helps remove oxidation from small parts without excessive abrasion.
5. Decal & Paint Work:
- Can be used to create fine scratches or scuffs for realistic aging.
- Helps remove unwanted decals or lettering without damaging the base material too much.
A glass fibre pencil is a versatile tool, but care should be taken as the tiny glass fibres can be irritating to skin and eyes—it’s a good idea to work in a well-ventilated area and clean up any debris carefully.
