Disc Magnets

SKU: N/A Category:

Description

Disc Magnets. A range of circular magnets manufactured from neodymium iron boron. Nickel plated to reduce corrosion. these are high power magnets ideal for triggering the magnetic reed switches.

Magnets used for Triggering Reed Switches

  • Reed Switch Mechanism: A reed switch is a small glass-enclosed device with two metal reeds that close when exposed to a magnetic field. Placing a small magnet on the underside of a locomotive, wagon, or coach triggers the reed switch as the vehicle passes over it.
  • Applications:
    • Track Occupancy Detection: Detect when a train enters or exits a specific section of track.
    • Automatic Signals: Trigger signals to change based on train position.
    • Level Crossing Gates: Open or close gates when a train approaches or departs.
    • Sound Effects or Announcements: Activate sound modules or station announcements.
    • Automation of Accessories: Control points (turnouts), lights, or other layout elements.

Use with Sensors and Electronics

Magnets and reed switches can be connected to DCC decoders or digital modules for advanced automation.  An example would be to trigger an automatic sequence. Such as route setting or block control and provide position feedback to analogue or DCC controllers for semi-automatic operation or monitoring.

Hall effect sensors are an alternative to reed switches. Hall effect sensors detect magnetic fields and can trigger precise actions and hey are more robust and sensitive than reed switches, making them ideal for detailed automation.

Advantages of Magnets in Model Railways

  • Simple and Reliable: Minimal maintenance and straightforward setup.
  • Non-Intrusive: Hidden magnets and sensors preserve the layout’s aesthetics.
  • Cost-Effective: Affordable way to add automation features.
  • Customizable: Magnets can be strategically placed for precise control of layout elements.

Considerations

  • Magnet Placement: Position magnets carefully to avoid unintentional triggering.
  • Switch Sensitivity: Ensure reed switches are tuned to the appropriate magnetic strength.
  • Compatibility: Test with your specific track and accessory systems for reliable operation.
